Developing and implementing effective active and blended learning experiences that take advantage of numerous technology tools and learning spaces in Cooper Hall is more complex and time consuming than preparing traditional lectures. To be successful, faculty need to be conversant with current, evidence-based pedagogies that inform active and blended learning, and need to feel comfortable using available technology.

In addition to providing technology tools and services that support SoN faculty in the creation of engaging learning strategies, and offering workshops and one-to-one consultation, SoN academic technology group also offers faculty ongoing development opportunities that encourage exchange of ideas, and foster educational innovation

  • 60 Small Changes Project (2015)
The goal of the project was to work with SoN faculty to make 60 small but meaningful, evidence-supported changes in undergraduate teaching, and – consequently – to make noticeable, positive impact on student learning.Participation required a brief, online application process. All SoN faculty and instructional academic staff who teach an undergraduate SoN course during 2014-15 academic year, have been invited to apply and participate. Priority was given to instructors who teach large undergraduate courses. Fourteen SoN faculty participated in a monthly one-hour exchange of ideas focused on a specific chapter from the ebook Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning by Brown, Roediger, and McDaniel. We’ve asked all participants to commit to attending and actively participating in at least 5 of 7 scheduled meetings, and to making – during the course of the academic year – at least four small, but meaningful changes in the way they teach, inspired by the readings and discussion. The project and its outcomes were shared with University community at the 2015 Teaching and Learning Symposium, and – outside of the University – at the 2015 Educause Learning Initiative (ELI) Annual Meeting.
